Student athletes find excitement in radio show

From the ice rink to the college radio station, two hosts who share a passion for ice hockey and classical rock music are adding a refreshing twist at the campus radio station.

Two members of Stevenson University’s men’s ice hockey team, Doug Rose and Greg Harney, host the show Rosey and the HarnDog, which airs every Wednesday from 10-11 p.m. on Wild Stang Radio (WSR).

Viewers also have the opportunity to watch the live video stream on the Periscope app for a full behind-the-scenes, in-studio experience.

Music variety on the show ranges from classic to modern rock with Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Eagles, The Front Bottoms, Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton and Santana.

As a baseline, Rose and Harney discuss highlights from their day and ease into the latest trends, referencing Twitter and other social media sites.

The two hosts value originality, keeping the show lightly scripted leaving room to improvise with spontaneous segment ideas. This may be anything from a daily riddle to an explanation of why Pluto is no longer considered a planet.

The hosts’ antics keep the audience engaged, since listeners can never be too sure of what to expect from each show.

Hosting a college radio show can help people learn about themselves in terms of personal and future goals and aspirations. Rose said he has a few years of experience working in a radio station environment, but he continues to learn more after every show, including what to do, what to say and how to cut the music.

Harney said he had often thought about being involved in radio, so to finally move forward with it has been exciting for him. He added that he looks forward to hosting the show each week.

When it comes to hosting a radio show, as experience grows, so does the passion for entertainment. In the words of Doug Rose, “How did we get to Fat Joe while talking about Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton? That’s the magic of Rosey and the Harndog.”
