The heart-racing, terror-inducing sequel, “The Conjuring 2,” rattles the audience’s psyche, solidifying its place among the Halloween horror movie classics.

Based on true events, “The Conjuring 2 begins in Enfield, North London, where a young girl, Janet Hodgson, is living an average teenage life until she is faced with a demonic poltergeist intent on tormenting her and her family. Returning in the sequel, Ed and Lorraine Warren, a real-life team of paranormal investigators, are hired to complete the preliminary investigation to determine the validity of the case. Upon looking into the case, the Warrens discover various unusual phenomena that quickly reveal they are dealing with a demonic force unlike anything they had ever faced before.

Along with the first movie of the series, the audience will see the reappearance of the Warrens. Ed Warren is a demonologist who has dedicated much of his life to studying, researching and recording demonic phenomena in an effort to control even the most profane instances of diabolical paranormal activity. Although an equal in paranormal expertise, Lorraine Warren is known for a unique gift, trance medium or clairvoyance. Through using her gift, Lorraine is able to drift in between reality and the spirit realm, which can allow her to see future events or sense paranormal activity.

In “The Conjuring 2,” director James Wan returns with another gripping horror story that builds on the success of its predecessor, “The Conjuring.” Wan is known for his recent successes including “Saw 1,” “Insidious 1 and 2,” “Furious 7.”  Although known for his ventriloquist dolls, Wan creates horrifying and spine-chilling demons that will have viewers clutching their seat.

Wan also successfully implements his trademark, reverse-tracking shot, which allows the viewer to focus on the action while the background changes perspectives. This technique creates an extra layer to the movie that forces the viewer to wonder what will come around the corner next.

A pulse-racing sequel, “The Conjuring 2” delivers on the many successful aspects of its precursor. Along with the immense expertise of Wan, Joseph Bishara revisits the horror movie series and imparts a horrifying musical score that pulls the audience into Wan’s petrifying world of demons.

In addition to the musical score, the sound effects chosen by Wan truly complete the horror movie experience. Whether it is heart-wrenching screams in the night or the deafening silence waiting for impending doom, the audience will feel the disturbing and spooky atmosphere throughout the film.

Although “The Conjuring 2 is no longer in the theaters, the movie can be rented on various platforms including Netflix, Amazon video, Redbox, or iTunes.
