Stevenson University students have more study abroad opportunities this year, including a trip to Korea and another to Ghana. That was the message at this year’s Study Abroad Fair, held Sept. 4 in Rockland Hall.
Faculty shared with students’ information on available classes for trips and exposed them to new cultures. Adjunct professor Adam Feldman, who taught the Korean class last year, gave a detailed explanation of how his course worked. He addressed earning academic credits to students and culture.
“You can’t really understand the culture from a book or even from a movie or a drama or something like that. But when you’re actually there, then you really understand culture,” Feldman said.
Third-year Esther Choi, who studied abroad in Korea last year, personally connected to being exposed to culture. Her parents lived in Korea.
“As a Korean American, I only grew up in American cultures, so it was definitely nice to see my parents’ culture, so that really brought a close bond with me and my parents,” Choi said.
When Stevenson students entered the fair, faculty welcomed and informed them of the opportunity to write their email and name down to be contacted later. If students had a particular interest in a trip, they could include it. Students had a multitude of individuals they could ask questions to, including faculty director for study abroad programs Laura Thomason, as well as her colleagues and other faculty.
At the fair, students became immersed in culture with Korean music, and had various refreshments offered: Pain au chocolat from France, Belgian sugar waffles, Korean Orion Choco Pies and more. Students grabbed their desired refreshments before they wandered around the fair.
