On a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon, the Stevenson field hockey team was eager to regain their defensive dominance that has been pivotal to their impressive 9-2-1 record this season. With a strong focus on defense, they’ve built a reputation for shutting down opponents, and their Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) opener was no exception.

Facing off against the #8 Spartans of York College of Pennsylvania, Stevenson took the game to penalty strokes after a scoreless defensive battle, ultimately earning a hard-fought 1-0 win via penalty strokes. This victory not only marked their first conference win but also secured their 10th win of the 2024 campaign.

Throughout the season, Stevenson’s defense has been an impenetrable wall, recording shutouts in eight of their 13 matches and only allowing eight goals overall. A key figure in this defensive success has been second-year goalkeeper Jordan Vradenburgh, whose standout performances have anchored the team’s defensive forefront.

“Jordan has been a really crucial part of our defense, as noted by her two defensive player of the week awards,” said second-year midfielder Shae Bennett.

Vradenburgh, already a two-time MAC Athlete of the Week, has only allowed eight goals this season and posted a career-high 12 saves in a crucial win over Mary Washington earlier in the year.

The team’s collective defensive effort has been a significant highlight of the season so far.

“As a unit, everyone plays a crucial role. We’re getting our defensive penalty corners (DPCs) on lockdown, and even in open play, we excel in defensive situations,” Bennett said.

Stevenson’s ability to work cohesively as a defensive unit, along with Vradenburgh’s leadership in goal, continues to drive their success as they look to maintain their momentum through the rest of the season.
