Stevenson men’s lacrosse knew one thing going into their match up with Dickinson; avenge their loss to Gettysburg. That is exactly what they did as the No. 19 Stevenson men’s lacrosse squad (4-2) took down No. 14 Dickinson (3-2) 16-10 on Saturday afternoon. Fourth-year Grant Zick led the Mustangs with a five-point afternoon with a hat trick and two assists.
Zick shared his thoughts about what the team’s mindset was going into this game and the lessons learned from the loss suffered against No. 9 Gettysburg when they fell 15 to 6. “Every loss is a learning experience, especially losses like that. I know we were all disapointed after that game so we came out this week with an extra chip on our shoulder.”
Stevenson suffered a loss against Dickinson last season 14 to 6, so the Mustangs wanted to go to Dickinson and avenge their loss against them.
Avenge the loss they did as Stevenson opened scoring with a goal from second-year Hunter Bryant followed by a second from third-year Brennan McKneely. The Devils put up their first goal with 11:32 on the clock, but the Mustangs replied with a three-goal run.
Second-year Gavin Gossen put Stevenson’s third goal home, followed by goals from second-year Darrell Curtis and third-year Max Racich. Dickinson replied with two goals to close out the first quarter, as Stevenson led 5-3.
In the second quarter, Stevenson put five more goals away while holding the Devils to four. Zick and second-year defenseman Camden Miller put away the first two goals of the quarter at 12:47 and 11:40, with Millers goal being the first of his collegiate career. Dickinson battled back with one, as Curtis replied with an eighth goal for the Mustangs. Before half, the Devils would put away three more goals, but Bryant and fourth-year Dillon Linhardt each netted a goal to secure a 10-7 lead at halftime.
The Mustangs came out ready to go in the second half starting with an immediate man-up goal from graduate student Andrew Searing six seconds in. Linhardt and Zick followed with a goal each to slot Stevenson at 13 points. Dickinson would put their eighth goal away with under a minute left in the third quarter, but the Mustangs still led the contest 13-8.

In the fourth quarter, Racich, Zick, and fourth-year Taz Delaney each fired away goals for Stevenson, as the defense held Dickinson to only two. Stevenson walked away with the 16-10 upset win over the Devils.
Zick led Stevenson with a five-point afternoon with three goals and two assists. Gossen registered three points with a goal and two assists. Bryant, Curtis, Linhardt, and Racich each posted two goals in the contest. Second-year Tyler Merchant held down the crease, making 17 saves in the match up and picked up four ground balls.
Zick shared his thoughts on what this win meant to the team, especially with it being an upset win on the road. “I think this win is what is expected from this team. We play one of the toughest teams in the country and we expect to win these games. We look to keep this momentum going into next weekend.”
Next weekend Stevenson will host their annual Mustang Classic featuring ten teams from across the division three lacrosse world.
Since the game on Saturday, Inside Lacrosse has reranked teams given their results recently.
This year the classic will feature No. 1 Tufts, No. 11 Washington & Lee No. 18 St. Lawerence, No. 17 Dickinson, No. 3 RIT, Hamilton, No. 5 Christopher Newport, No. 13 Lynchburg, No.8 Gettysburg and No. 14 Stevenson.
Recently, Stevenson officially renamed the Mustang Classic, the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic to honor the life and legacy of former lacrosse standout and Stevenson University alumnus, Callum Robinson. This pays tribute to Robinson’s exceptional achievements as a student-athlete, a leader, and impactful member of the Stevenson University community.

Zick shared his thoughts on what Stevenson is doing to prepare for these next two games. “We just have to keep our head down and keep working. We know we have two tough matchups coming up and will work this week to make sure we are ready.”
The Mustangs will prepare to face No. 18 Lynchburg in the Callum Robinson Mustang Classic on Friday evening. The game is set to begin at 8:30 p.m. They will also face No. 13 St. Lawerence, as that game is also set to begin at 8:30 p. m Saturday.
