The Stevenson University softball team earned a split in Tuesday’s non-conference doubleheader against the University of Mary Washington. After falling 3-2 in the opener, the Mustangs bounced back in a big way with an 11-6 victory in game two.
Game 1 – Mary Washington 3, Stevenson 2
The host Eagles struck first with a run in the opening inning, but the Mustangs responded in the third. McKenzie Tobler delivered a double to left field, bringing home Caylee Cliett to even the score.
Stevenson then took a brief 2-1 lead in the fourth when Danielle Mills singled through the left side to plate Rebecca Henry.
However, Mary Washington regained control in the fifth with two runs to secure the 3-2 win.
Tobler and Tessa Boswell led the Mustangs with two hits each, while Henry, Mills, and Cliett also contributed a hit apiece. Angelica Gurevich took the loss, dropping to 7-3 on the season after striking out six and walking four over six innings.
Game 2 – Stevenson 11, Mary Washington 6
Stevenson found itself in an early 4-0 hole after two innings, but the bats came alive in the third. Rebecca Maiorano tripled down the left field line, scoring Henry and Mykaela Getz.
Ava Stafursky followed with a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Maiorano, and Mills added an RBI single to tie the game at 4-4.
The Eagles briefly regained the lead at 6-4, but Stevenson erupted for five runs in the sixth.
Tobler doubled home Maddie Buher, then scored on a fielding error to tie it. A clutch two-run single from Henry plated Maiorano and Getz, and Teagan Kreshik later crossed the plate on a passed ball to give Stevenson a 9-6 advantage.
Maiorano capped the scoring in the seventh with a two-run single through the left side, bringing home Tobler and Sahara Ward.
The Mustangs racked up 16 hits in the win, with Tobler, Maiorano, and Henry each collecting three hits. Getz, Boswell, and Mills added two hits apiece. Ky Vaughn earned the win in relief, tossing five strong innings and allowing just four hits while striking out one.
Stevenson (20-8) returns home on Friday to host York (Pa.) College in MAC Commonwealth action.
