The Stevenson University baseball team earned a hard-fought split in Saturday’s MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against York College of Pennsylvania, winning the opener 4-3 in extra innings before dropping game two 9-4.
Game 1 – Stevenson 4, York (Pa.) 3 (8 Innings)
Stevenson came out on top in a thrilling game one, getting the go ahead run in the eighth inning after Brady Bedway put the ball in play and York committed a costly error, allowing Vincent Licor to cross home plate with the winning run.
The Mustangs rallied early, taking a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Zach Majeski started the frame with a single to left that scored Matt Perri, followed by a sacrifice fly from Michael McGarry that brought in Collin Palmieri.
Stevenson regained the lead in the sixth when Sam Batiancila knocked an RBI single to bring in McGarry, making it 3-2. However, York answered back to tie it in the seventh before the Mustangs sealed it in extras.
Eight different Mustangs recorded hits, including Bedway, Sears, Majeski, Palmieri, Perri, McGarry, Licor, and Batiancila.
Ari Lonstein earned the win in relief, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts and two walks. John Delgado started and gave Stevenson four strong innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out three. Caden Dail added two solid innings out of the bullpen, and Sommers Turner closed out the eighth.
This was Stevenson’s first win against their conference foe since 2018.
Game 2 – York (Pa.) 9, Stevenson 4 (7 Innings)
In the nightcap, Stevenson fell into an early hole and couldn’t fully recover as York took advantage of early momentum to claim a 9-4 victory.
The Spartans jumped ahead 4-0 after two innings, but the Mustangs began to chip away at the deficit. In the third, Brady Bedway doubled to left to drive in Connor Endres.
After York tacked on two more runs, Stevenson responded in the fifth when Nick Griffin laced a two-run single to score Endres and Bedway, trimming the lead to 6-3.
Batiancila capped Stevenson’s scoring with a solo home run to left in the seventh, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
Bedway posted his second multi-hit game of the day, while Griffin, Batiancila, and Endres also tallied hits.
Zane Stone took the loss on the mound, allowing four runs over 1.1 innings, striking out two and walking one.
