The Stevenson men’s lacrosse team saw its postseason journey come to an end Saturday afternoon with a 15-6 loss to University of Lynchburg in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship Tournament.
The Mustangs struck first, as Hunter Bryant found the back of the net just over two minutes into the contest to give Stevenson an early 1-0 edge. However, the momentum quickly shifted in favor of the Hornets, who unleashed a dominant 10-goal scoring run that left Stevenson reeling.
Andrew Searing finally broke the drought late in the second quarter, but Lynchburg carried a commanding 10-2 lead into halftime.
Looking to regroup after the break, Max Racich delivered the first goal of the second half for the Mustangs. Still, the Hornets continued to apply pressure, trading goals with Stevenson before extending their lead.
Searing and Bryant each tallied another goal during the third quarter, showing brief sparks of offense, but Lynchburg answered with their 12th goal to widen the gap to 12-5.
In the final frame, Darrell Curtis netted Stevenson’s sixth and final goal of the afternoon at the 10:27 mark. The Hornets closed out the game with three unanswered goals, sealing a 15-6 victory and advancing in the tournament.
Offensively, Bryant and Searing led the way with two goals apiece, while Racich and Curtis each added one.
On the defensive end, Nik Leahan stood out with three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Camden Miller forced two turnovers and picked up three ground balls. In net, Tyler Merchant recorded 11 saves in a valiant effort.
