Stevenson Athletics had another busy week, although it was a largely unsuccessful one. Football, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis all faced losses this week against tough opponents. In a more positive light, field hockey remains undefeated, women’s golf placed fifth in their match at McDaniel college and men’s golf placed third in their match at Elizabethtown college.
Football faced Lebanon Valley college on the road for their first MAC Conference game of the season where they fell 37-7. SU’s only touchdown came in the second quarter on a one-yard pass from Landon Winterbottom to Deion Richardson. With three interceptions and only 223 yards of total offense, the Dutchmen dominated both sides of the ball for the entire game. Second-year wide receiver Dillon Johnson led the team in receptions with six for 63 yards. On the rushing side, third-year running back Kirk Reed, and first year running back Elijah Williams led with five attempts each, gaining 37 and 30 yards respectively. Fourth-year linebacker Clarence Travis led the defense with 10 total tackles.
Women’s volleyball fell 3-1 against Catholic University in another road match. First-year Rachel Lenz is continuing to lead the Mustangs, contributing a team high 16 kills and three aces against the Cardinals. Other offensive leaders include Giulia Viglietta with 13 kills and Maren Zepfel with 10. Nicolette Fuglestad led the defense with 18 digs, with Claire Thompson and Lenz behind her with 14 each.
Men’s soccer fell 1-0 to Shenandoah University on the road and 3-0 to Elizabethtown College at home. Between the two losses, Ellis Amo-Gottfried led the Mustangs with four total shots, with one on goal. Gianfranco Vitella also contributed two shots between the two games. Against Shenandoah in goal, Giannacarlo Alderetes notched two saves, and against Elizabethtown, Nolen Olson-Warwick contributed three saves.
Women’s soccer fell twice on the road, 2-0 against St. Mary’s college and 1-0 against Elizabethtown college. The Mustangs put up an impressive 10 shots against St. Mary’s with four shots being on goal. Graduate student Kelly Schultz led the offense with three total shots. In the loss against Elizabethtown, second-year goalkeeper Alison Halstead contributed nine saves to keep the Blue Jays to one goal.
Men’s tennis fell 5-2 to Penn State Harrisburg on the road. Simeon Smith and Luke Appleman picked up the lone doubles win, beating the number one Penn State Harrisburg doubles team 6-4. Honour Zan then contributed the lone singles win, 6-4 and 6-2.
Women’s tennis also fell 5-2 to Penn State Harrisburg on the road. In the doubles matches, Shelby Carter & Ariella Stepleman and Sofia McCoy and Tiffany Njemanze picked up wins for the Mustangs. Stepleman also went on to win her singles match later in the day.
Field hockey continues their undefeated streak with wins over Penn State Harrisburg and McDaniel, each with a score of 3-0. Graduate student Emma Gladstein scored all three goals against Penn State Harrisburg, with assists coming from second-years Lauren Schulz, Shae Bennett, and Lauren Tobin. Against McDaniel, goals came from all over the roster. Fourth-year Hailey Palmer scored the first goal of the game, assisted by Schulz and Gladstein. First-year Coco Wallace netted the second goal off another assist by Schulz. Third-year Annie Ingersoll scored the final goal of the game and her first goal of the season.
Women’s golf placed fifth in the McDaniel Fall Invite, where Alexis Marsh led the Mustangs by finishing 12th at 17 over par. Men’s golf saw similar success at the Elizabethtown Fall Invite where they placed third. Ryan Thomas tied for third overall and following him, Sean Dowd tied for fifth.
