Career Services inspires student success

Career+Services+inspires+student+success

Stevenson University offers a variety of career choices to strengthen students’ educational experiences and opportunities. The Office of Career Services relies on a program called Handshake to help students and alumni find part-time and full-time positions as part of the entire career package, but the program is much more versatile than most job boards.

Handshake is an online database that enables students to look for internships and jobs within their field of study. The program is an easy way to contact employers, demonstrate career interests and also be notified about events on campus that target a wide variety of skills and careers.

Jennifer Marin Jericho, industry specialist for the School of Design at Career Services, explained, “We are career coaches, and we will always be there to support students and to help them stay accountable.” The career team also helps students prepare their resumes and offers feedback for mock interviews.

Solane Kaba, a sophomore business administration major, said that Career Services does its part to help each student so that students can do their part to help themselves.

Although Handshake is designed to help students find jobs, Marin Jericho makes it clear that Career Services, as a whole, is there to help students find success in their careers. Handshake is a multi-faceted tool that includes postings about job fairs, work-study positions, on-campus interview sessions, mentor mixers and other events designed to interest every major. Students can even plan and schedule appointments directly on Handshake.

The Office of Career Services is located on the Owings Mills campus on the first floor of Wooded Way. The spot is convenient to most students who can take advantage of the opportunities at any time.

Marin-Jericho noted that students do not have to have to search for an internship or a job to take advantage of Career Services. Students can start building their profile on Handshake on the first day of their freshman year before a job search even begins. She also mentioned that employers will only post relevant and current job postings on Handshake. Members of the Career Services team are available through email to assist in any way possible.

Anne Scholl-Fiedler, vice president of Career Services, believes that it is important for all students to take advantage of everything her office offers. “Career Services provides all the tools to get clear on motivated skill sets, interests, and values and how to pull that together into a professional brand,” she said, adding that students can avail themselves of the training necessary to make their brand more personalized.
