Resume and interview workshop improve skills

Stevenson University’s Office of Career Services offers weekly resume workshops and biweekly interview skills workshops to help students improve their skills and abilities in these two areas.

These workshops offer expert advice for students to get a basic start until they meet with a member of the Career Services team to polish and add finishing touches.

Resume workshops are held every Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the Career Services office in Wooded Way. For students who wish to attend one of these workshops, it is highly recommended that they RSVP to let Career Services know the number of students attending, according to Connie Harrington, the career advisor for Stevenson University Online.

Harrington said at these workshops a trained “career peer” presents a PowerPoint presentation that explains in detail the information that a resume should include in each section. This information is more developed than what students would receive if they just went to a walk-in session.

When attending one of these workshops, students should bring a copy of their resume if they have it. By bringing this information to the workshop, they can focus the information towards the specific job that the student is interested in.

After attending the resume workshop, Career Services personnel recommend that students make an appointment and bring their resume in for a final look-over.

Resumes are one of the most valuable factors when it comes to the hiring process. Sonya Lawyer, the internship director for the School of Design, explained that resumes are the “first impression” that a candidate makes on the employer, so it is important to make it a good one.

Career Services holds interview workshops every other Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., also in Wooded Way. Upcoming workshops will be held on April 25 and May 9, according to Harrington.

Cary Smedley, the director of operations for Career Services, runs the interview workshops. She offers a PowerPoint presentation to the whole group, allowing questions and answers as needed.

Freshman Kaeli Sutryk said that she is excited that Stevenson is offering an interview skills workshop because those skills can benefit her throughout her career.

Unlike the resume workshop, students do not have to bring anything to this workshop.
