True life: I’m a workaholic

Between my classes, part-time job, extracurricular activities, and attempt at a social life, I have little time to myself. Despite all attempts to free my schedule, being busy makes me happy. I am a self-proclaimed workaholic, and I thrive off of overexerting myself; however, this life ain’t easy.

Being a workaholic is intense and exhausting. I don’t mean to complain, but sometimes the hard work doesn’t pay off. If you are anything like me, I think you’ll agree that these next few realities are too true for those of us who do it all.

1. Stress crying happens at least once a week.

It’s often unwarranted… but it is always necessary. I find myself losing my cool over lame, irrelevant things at least once a week. I may be crying because of all my responsibilities or simply because I spilled mustard on my shirt; nonetheless, crying serves an emotional purpose. Research even shows that each falling teardrop releases stress hormones and toxins.

2. You often dream about sitting and relaxing.
After a hectic, 12-hour school day, the thing I look forward to most is my drive home. Being able to relax, sing out loud, call a friend or sit in silence is the perfect way to relax after a busy day. Plus, it helps me refuel for all my homework and chores that await as I pull into my driveway.

3. Your hard works goes unnoticed… a lot.
Our friends, professors, and families sometimes forget how much we have on our plate. Working long, hard hours without a break is taxing on the mind and body. When your hard work goes unnoticed, your tasks may feel even more challenging. Reminding workaholics that you are proud of them or admire their work may make their day.

4. You have a type-A personality.
Being type-A means you are thoughtful, sensitive and proactive. You are adept at organizing, competing, and overachieving. You will drive yourself crazy because being type-A is exhausting. But it is also awesome because you are capable of so much.

5. You take great pride in your work.
Despite the harsh realities associated with being a workaholic, you are proud of your accomplishments. Your work ethic is admirable. Your proactive nature cannot be ignored. You are organized and ambitious – a real force to be reckoned with.

Despite what working around the clock entails, you probably show no signs of slowing down if you are anything like me. Keep on keeping on, workaholics… but remember, give yourself a break every now and then!
