The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA) and Phi Sigma Sigma sorority will host Casino Night on Thursday, Nov. 16, from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. in the Rockland banquet room.
AKA is an international service organization whose “members consist of distinguished young women who have excellent academic records, proven leadership skills and are involved in the community through advocacy and service,” according to the Stevenson University Student Activities page.
Phi Sigma Sigma is a sorority that “promotes friendship and cooperation among college women of all races and creeds, to provide service, to raise the standard of university ideals and to promote philanthropic efforts.” Members of this sorority sponsor social events, fundraisers and participate in activities with other area chapters, according to the Stevenson University Student Activities page.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to Casino Night for an evening of card games, raffle drawings, refreshments and other activities. Attendees will receive playing chips to play at the casino tables of their choice, in exchange for raffle tickets.
“As a way of giving back to the community, students can bring nonperishable food items in exchange for raffle tickets. Everyone has a chance of winning a prize even if they do not participate in any of the casino games,” said Phillip Gatling Jr., assistant director of Student Activities.
The event is part of the newly branded late-night programming initiative, “SU After Dark.” The events in the series take place Thursday nights between 10 p.m and 1 a.m. They are part of a new program created by President Elliot Hirshman, in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs, Student Activities, and Stevenson University clubs and organizations, to encourage students to stay on campus Thursday nights.
The 55-plus clubs and organizations on campus are encouraged to take part in the “SU After Dark” series in order to increase campus life on Thursday evenings with a variety of entertainment. Organizations that apply for an event four weeks before the actual day of the event can receive funding to cover the expenses, according to the Office of Student Activities press letter released on Sept. 20.
Clubs or organizations interested in hosting an “SU After Dark” event or those interested in being a part of the the planning committee for future late night events can contact Gatling through campus email.
