Being a leader of a club or organization at Stevenson requires hard work, as student club leaders must possess the ability to delegate roles, create, plan, execute events, and be role models for the next set of student leaders.
To help develop student leadership skills, Phil Gatling, assistant director of student activities, has created a leadership workshop series for Stevenson students. The workshops began in the fall semester of 2017, and continue this spring. There have already been two workshops so far this semester. Gatling believes that it is important for students to be given the opportunity to learn the ropes of what it takes to be a campus student leader.
The workshops are open to current E-Board members, potential E-Board members, and general members of a club or organization. Stevenson students who are not a part of a club or organization are also welcome to attend.
The purpose of the “Being the Best Club Leader Workshop Series” is to provide club and organization leaders with the following:
- A better understanding of the club and organization special funding system
- The ability to create and execute events for campus involvement and diversity
- A knowledge of best practices in budgeting
- The skills to set goals and plan effectively
- The ability to communicate the purpose behind the club or organization
- Techniques to market events effectively
- The skill to create objectives and guidelines for an effective club
Students who want to learn how to be strong leaders can attend one of the workshops. Each workshop focuses on a specific skill set that is important to the growth of clubs on campus and the creation of stronger student leaders.
There are a number of benefits students may gain after attending any of the leadership workshop series sessions. Students will be able to hear outside perspectives from other student leaders, as well as networking with other students, which could potentially lead to future collaborations on campus. Attendees will gain the opportunity to connect with clubs that may have similar objectives for general members. Lastly, students can enhance their skills in leadership, making for an even better club experience.
