Stevenson’s annual fashion show will be held this year on May 5 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. at the Baltimore War Memorial. General admission tickets are $15 for students, and include free transportation to the War Memorial.
The show highlights the growth of the senior fashion and merchandising class, showing off the students’ final designs before graduation. There will be over 120 garments, 45 models and 60 designers. For the first time, the show will be held off-campus at the Baltimore War Memorial in Baltimore.
With the change of setting, designers are getting first-hand experience of showcasing their work at a larger venue. The show will also serve as a networking opportunity for the designers. The show at the War Memorial will give students the chance to show their work to the local fashion world, as some of the biggest fashion design houses in the area are in Baltimore.
Forest Bell, interim chair and assistant professor of fashion design and merchandising, said, “We want to bring a community beyond just Stevenson.” Models were chosen during two model calls open to everyone. There will be models from local agencies, some Stevenson students, and models from the Special Olympics.
Kourtney Shearer, one of the producers for the show, said that the Special Olympic models “absolutely love doing it, and they really do rock it. It really is such an honor to be able to teach them how to work the runway. We all have fun working with each other.”
The designers have been working hard to demonstrate all aspects of fashion design and construction that they have learned while attending Stevenson. Classes in beginning and advanced draping, garment construction, and tailoring, for instance, have contributed to each designer’s aesthetic. Each class has also created a theme such as “Nature’s Revenge” and “Sustainably.”
Awards will also be given out at the end the show, including best collection, best in show, best construction and best innovation. Garments will be judged by four judges during the show. The emcee for the show is Kristi Stevens, a blogger in the Baltimore area.
