The Stevenson University softball team has hopes of making a run for the conference championship in 2016. The Mustangs are coming off a 19-22 record last season and are looking to better that in 2016. The team returns a solid core of upperclassman and has brought in some key newcomers. Freshman Erin Stephey and Kayla Maggio in particular have impressed head coach Joey Lye thus far.

“Both of them are athletic and have great bats. I am expecting them to make an impact this year,” said Lye. Stephey, a shortstop, and Maggio, a catcher and middle infielder, should each be a factor both on defense and at the plate as a freshman combo. With a solid foundation, the Mustangs believe they have the potential to be a contender in the conference this year.

“I expect us to have a consistent and solid season, and hopefully we’ll be in the championship game at the end,” said Lye, adding that this is the first year she will coach a team that she fully recruited, and this adds a bit of excitement for her.

One past concern for the Mustangs has been their pitching. Although the team has always had a reputation of playing solid defense and with a strong offense, pitching could be a make or break.

“The pitching staff has been working hard to bring their game up to the next level. I believe our pitching staff will prove to be impressive,” said Lye.

The Mustangs open their season on March 5 with a double header against Hood College. The team will then go on a 12-game road trip, which could prove to be a challenge, but nevertheless a good test to prepare for conference play. With a lineup that should be solid both offensive and defensively, the Mustangs’ season will likely come down to the performance of their pitching staff.
