Despite the challenges they have faced this season, “taking it one game at a time” best describes the current status of Stevenson University’s softball team. Falling short of reaching their goal to advance to the NCAAs last season, they “left it all on the field,” said coach Joey Lye. Despite their rough start in 2016, Lye is extremely confident about the potential of the team to turn things around.

“We have a talented team and amazing team chemistry, so we are just working to put it together on the field,” she said.

Their biggest challenges this year actually happen to be off the field. In addition to the athletes having several responsibilities and commitments such as time-intensive majors and jobs outside of school, they are currently in search of a temporary coach. The team has a coaching staff of two people and needs someone to assist with the workload behind the scenes as well as helping run drills at practices. Nevertheless, the Mustangs remain optimistic. “We are a resilient team that has come a long way and we look forward to battling our way into a successful season,” said Lye. With their most recent games splitting with Penn State Harrisburg, the Mustangs can take away positives from another win.

As of March 23, the team is 3-9, and 0-2 in the conference. They spent spring break in Clermont, Fla., winning two games against Westfield State University and Carthage College respectively. With an overall batting average of .322 (.308 in the conference), and an earned run average of 5.46 (8.75 in the conference), according to gomustangsports.com, the Mustangs are struggling to find their rhythm. The team is putting together a 5k race on behalf of Courtney Cook ’15, to benefit MS research.
