The Stevenson University women’s softball season is summarized by head coach Joey Lye as “not fantastic” with a record of 9-15. However, Lye is expecting that their excellent teamwork will be a sign of better results  in the future. The team is focused on taking it one game at a time. Wth this mindset, the team has been able to develop unique chemistry, which does come easy.

On April 2, the Mustangs swept conference rival Lebanon Valley College. The first game was a 3-2 victory for Stevenson, while the Mustangs won 6-4 in the second. In the win, the Mustangs defeated the defending conference champions at their home field, a difficult feat. Following this win, the Mustangs had two tough losses to Widener University, falling short in the first game 6-2, but had a closer loss in the second game, 8-6. Stevenson is currently 4-4 in the conference with tough teams Messiah and Albright still ahead.

Coach Lye has created ‘Practice Player of the Week’ as an incentive to motivate her players to work harder during practice. Lye will select players based on whom she felt worked extremely hard each week. The following week, the recipient will be able to come to practice dressed in whatever attire she wants. The team will keep additional statistics on the players in order to see who is excelling and what areas as a team need focus. Some of these statistics, for instance, are based on productivity at lead-off batter, and on-base percentages. Recording these numbers offers players another way to  motivate themselves.

The team will be adding a graduate assistant to the coaching staff. Applicants do not need to be a former athlete; however, they must be able to maintain a 3.0 GPA. Those interested in applying should contact Lye through campus email.

The team will face conference rival Albright College on Saturday, April 30, where they will also honor their five seniors.
