The Stevenson University women’s soccer team is gearing up for a key matchup Saturday against the Salisbury Seagulls. With the regular season winding down, both teams are eager to secure a win in what promises to be a competitive contest.
Kayla Gerbes, a third-year starting midfielder for the Mustangs, emphasized the hard work the team has been putting into practice, focusing on tightening their defense and communicating better on the field.
“Salisbury always brings their A-game, but we’re feeling confident,” Gerbes said.
Gerbes highlighted the message the team has received heading into this crucial game.
“The coaches have really emphasized getting back to the basics,” she said. “In previous games, like against Delaware Valley and Shenandoah, we relied on our fundamentals, played without anxiety, and had fun. That allowed us to play as a team, not as individuals. We’ll be using a 4-3-3 defense for this match, which I believe will work out well.”
Reflecting on the season so far, Gerbes described it as “a roller coaster” due to the team’s inconsistency.
“We’ve beaten some really good teams but have also tied with teams who lost to the ones we beat. Some days we show up ready to play, and other days we don’t,” Gerbes said.
Despite this unpredictability, Gerbes expressed the team’s close-knit bond, which has been beneficial, though it hasn’t always translated to success on the field.
Stevenson currently holds a 2-5-4 record for the 2024 season, and while recent victories have boosted their standing, the Mustangs face a formidable challenge against Salisbury. Known for their aggressive style of play, the Seagulls will test Stevenson’s resolve as the Mustangs aim to build on their recent momentum.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Salisbury’s Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex, and fans are encouraged to come out and show their support.
