Stevenson’s Residence Life has hired two new resident directors to fill positions vacated during the summer of 2016. Changes within Stevenson’s residence life staff have allowed for the recent additions of Emily Scharen and Jason Summers.
Scharen received her duel undergraduate degree at Rowan University in law-justice and psychology which propelled her to pursue a Master’s degree at Shippensburg University, where she had the opportunity to serve as a resident director while she was there. Summers received his undergraduate degree and a Master’s at the University of St. Louis in higher education.
Scharen enjoys community service and says that traveling and service help gain “a better understanding of cultures, people and even an understanding of yourself.” She was also featured in an episode of MTV’s show “Made,” where she set the goal to compete in a hip-hop dance battle and took away the winning title.
Summers emphasizes service leadership and uses personal hobbies including reading, documentaries, and poetry to stay connected to his passion for knowledge and diversity. He teaches students how to grow outside of their comfort zone by “learning to be comfortable being uncomfortable.”Summers’ staff and residents often challenge him to a game of chess in his office, usually unaware that he’s been playing since he was 5 years old.
Residents in Western Run,Wooded Way, Herring Run and Wakefield believe they have gained some excellent additions with these new staff members, and the new resident directors are excited to be a part of the Stevenson community as they learn what it means to be a Mustang.
