The African Student Union will introduce rooted culture to a diverse makeup of students in this year’s Experience Africa Festival on Nov. 5 from 4-7 p.m. in the Ratcliffe Center on the Owings Mills campus.

The event will offer an opportunity for students to eat cultural food, listen to ethnic music, and appreciate African dance and performance in an effort to broaden knowledge about African culture.

“It’s a very casual event, meant to bring together students of all diverse backgrounds to enjoy something new,” said member Temitayo Fatimat Toyin-Oke. “This event is a great way for ASU to drive home its theme of unity, diversity, and inclusion. The African Student Union is ready for students of Stevenson University to get involved with culture and come together to enjoy the aspects of our differences.”

The club provides an opportunity for members to learn more about African culture and origins, and is open to all, not just those of African heritage.

The club hopes that connecting with other African Student Union groups at Towson University and Morgan State University, for instance, will encourage unity and interest in the group. The group is also involved in service to refugee organizations, according to Giovanna Ama Baisie-Arthur, an organizer of the ASU, who spoke last spring to SU-TV.
