A basket bingo night on Nov. 12 will be hosted by one of Stevenson’s sororities, Phi Sigma Sigma, in Rockland Conference Room A.

The sorority is comprised of over 100 members, who have donated the items that make up the prize baskets given out when participants win a Bingo round. In addition, there will be a 50/50 raffle, as well as circulating donation cups to collect extra funds for the organization.

SUPPORTING A CAUSE

The profits from the bingo are split between the sorority’s personal fundraising and their specific philanthropic cause, school and college readiness.

Last year, Bingo participants were asked to bring school supplies and in return got to play an extra round of bingo.   The supplies were donated to The Wish List Depot so that they could be distributed to schools in need in Baltimore City.

In addition to raising money, they are organizing a donation table at the event, for which they are asking attendees to bring items such as hats, gloves and scarves to donate to children of inner city Baltimore.

Jacqueline Smith, who has been a member of Phi Sigma Sigma for about a year, is this year’s fundraising co-chair, specifically for the Basket Bingo event.

“This is a fun event,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to win cool stuff while helping out.”

If students are interested in doing more to help out, the sorority holds two fundraisers every semester. Their Yankee Candle sale just ended Oct. 30, but there will be two more opportunities to support a good cause in the spring. The group also hosts occasional food nights, where a local eatery will sponsor them and give a percentage of their profits to the sorority.

“Joining [Phi Sigma Sigma] in general is a great way to get involved,” Smith said. She stressed the importance of being part of an organization that is both fun and fulfilling, adding that interested female students are always welcome.
