An event titled “Careers in Writing” will be held on March 31 from noon-2 p.m. in the Rockland banquet room, according to Dr. Laura Smith, chair of the English department.

The department held a similar event called “Careers in Publishing” last spring, which had a great turnout, said Smith. A quarter of Stevenson’s alumni chose careers in publishing, while careers in writing remains popular. The upcoming event will be split into two-parts. The first half will consist of a panel of professionals and alumni speaking about their experience in their writing careers.

The panel ranges from professionals with one to eight years of experience. They will discuss a variety of topics such as how they got their job, why they love it, what skills they still wish to learn and more. This event will also cover emerging challenges in writing careers today. New skills are required for careers in writing as technology, digital platforms and market strategies continue to change. After speaking about their career experiences, the panel will offer an opportunity for students to ask questions and discuss concerns.

The second half of the event will give students an opportunity to look for internships and jobs. While some students may not have the experience that employers desire, this event is a chance for them to “get their foot in the door,” and network with employers who offer careers in their chosen field.

Smith noted that this event is not just for English majors; it is for anyone who is interested in a career in writing, or anyone who is passionate about writing. Panel participants include Laissez Faire, Baltimore Magazine, Connections Education, Jewish Museum of Maryland, Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts, Scribe America, and a freelance writer.

“‪We are excited about hosting a career event geared specifically toward the writing professions and hope students in other majors will attend,” Smith added.
