Stevenson University’s outdoor track and field team had record-breaking performances at the Goucher College Track and Field Classic and the Danny Curran Invitational at Widener University. Several members of both the men’s and women’s teams broke school records.

At the Goucher College Track and Field Classic, the men’s team had four members break school records. Sophomore Tevin Bailey broke the school high jump record, freshman Sid Yap broke the school discus record, junior Curtis McInnis broke his own school record in the hammer toss and sophomore Cooper Smelski broke his own school record in the pole vault, according to Gomustangsports.com.

The women’s team was equally as successful, with several members breaking school records as well. Freshman Dyonne Hicks set school records in both the long jump and 400m hurdles, sophomore Kelly Winklbauer broke the school record in the 3000m run, freshmen Danika Ani set a school outdoor record in the shot put, and freshman Kiarra Nowell set a new school record in discus, while both men’s and women’s broke school records in the 4x100m relays, according to gomustangsports.com.

Head coach Erick Camodeca said that the men accomplished their goal at Goucher. As for the women, Camodeca said their goal was much harder as they had to face the defending national champions of Baldwin Wallace University; however, the women stepped up to the challenge and won first place in the event.

At the Danny Curran Invitational, both teams had additional record-setting days. On the men’s side, a relay team composed of senior Devonte Williams, sophomore Tylor Bailey, freshman Aaron Holliday and sophomore Matt Riggins set a new school record in the 4x100m and earned first overall in the event. Furthermore, McInnis broke his own school record again in the hammer throw, according to gomustangsports.com.

Three members of the women’s team broke school records. Freshman Cierra Roberts set a school record in the 400m dash, sophomore Lauren Dioses broke her own school record in the hammer toss, and Hicks broke the school record in the triple jump

According to Camodeca, there are two individuals whom he feels could have breakout seasons. He believes Riggins has shown that he has the potential to excel in his performances thus far. On the women’s side, Camodeca believes Dioses has shown tremendous ability in the hammer throw and discus for a breakout year.

Camodeca said that the two teams are well on their way to meeting their goals for the season, adding that they are looking for marks that will put the two teams in the top 20 in the nation. The Mustangs’ next events are at Messiah College April 6-8.
