The Office of Career Services is planning an employer networking event dedicated to veterans, to be held in the Rockland banquet room on Thursday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will begin with kick-off speaker, Matthew Morris, a 2016 Stevenson graduate and a U.S. Army veteran. He will talk about his transition from military service to college, as well as his transition from college to the workplace.
A discussion of Career Crosswalk for Skills will follow, demonstrating how military skill sets can be translated into civilian language. The event, sponsored by Bank of America, will bring employers looking to fill open positions to Stevenson University for round-table discussions with veterans. The Office of Career Services highly recommends that attendees dress professionally and bring their resumes.
Employers planning to attend the event include Enterprise Rent-A-Car; Dunbar Armored; Kennedy Krieger Institute; Social Security Administration; CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield; Fidelity Direct Mortgage; Merrill Edge; Republic National Distributing Company; Restoration East, LLC., Ultimate Staffing Services and United Parcel Service.
Shane Knickman, veterans peer advisor in the Office of Career Services, said that the career event “is designed to put employers who want to hire veterans and the veterans in the same room, to network and discuss career options and pathways.”
Knickman explained that he has worked with a team to plan and coordinate the event, reached out to veterans to inform them of the event, and invited employers to attend. He said that this event is not only for students of Stevenson University, but for any veteran in the community.
“This event is important for various reasons; one that stands out to me is the ability to look out for and help another veteran possibly find employment or support in the job search process,” said Knickman.
Anne E. Scholl-Fiedler, vice president of Career Services, said she has been serving as a supporter to the Veteran’s Career Education Program at Stevenson for the past five years. She has provided guidance in the publication of the Veteran’s Career Resource Guide and employer networking events.
“I believe that [the Career Veteran Event] is important for several reasons, including the fact that we want to provide a venue for veterans to hear success stories of those who have transitioned from military service to college to civilian careers. We also want to provide a space for veterans and employers to have in-depth conversations regarding skill sets and career pathways,” said Scholl-Fiedler.
