Stevenson University’s Office of Career Services offers interview skill workshops weekly to help students improve their ability to succeed in the job forum.

During these workshops, students will be offered career advice and will gain confidence for future interviews.

Career advisor Kelly Fewster said, “Interviewing is a skill in itself; to improve on the interview skills, you have to practice.” She explained that students don’t want to sound like robots when they are talking, adding that they should try to be authentic and balanced when they are getting interviewed.

The Office of Career Services also has a program called “Executive-in-Residence,” through which professionals come to the Office of Career Services in Wooded Way once a week to conduct mock interviews. These people have worked in different professions, and they volunteer to help students improve their interview skills.

Writer and radio host Celeste Headlee noted that another important part of the interview is the resume, which may help to get students the initial interview. The Office of Career Services can help students develop a sound resume as well, working with peer advisors or with the professional staff there.

Career Services also offers “Career Chats,” conversations on different career topics, and there are some scheduled this semester specifically on interview skills. Career Chats are held on alternate Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-5 p.m. During these chats, some important tips will be shared on interview skills, including making sure you are on time, dressing professionally, speaking and acting politely, and using a confident and firm handshake.

Career Services host many events for students to help them prepare to get a job after college. The office sponsors one Career and Internship Fair each semester, giving students an opportunity to connect with the government, profit, and non-profit organizations. The Career Services staff encourages all students to attend these events to gain experience with employers in the workforce.
