“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” may have a star-studded cast, but it completely missed the mark during its opening weekend in the box office. With the unveiling of the new Batman, Ben Affleck, fans were more than excited to see his spin on the Caped Crusader and watch him take on
Superman in this exciting new collaboration of a Marvel vs DC crossover.
It wasn’t the lack of attendance during its $17 million opening weekend, or the style of acting, it was the poor, drawn-out story plot that left the audience feeling disappointed. The story that unfolds in the first hour and 45 minutes honestly should have taken 30 minutes, and it wasn’t until the end of the movie that fans get what they came to see – Batman fighting Superman. Nearly the entire movie was about the background of Batman, how Bruce Wayne became his alter ego, and how Superman couldn’t stand Batman’s vigilante antics. It isn’t until the last half hour of the movie with antagonist Lex Luther, portrayed wonderfully by Jesse Eisenburg, does the show get rolling.
Teasing quips about Wonder Woman occur throughout the movie, and finally in the end we get her debut. What saves this movie is the team of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman when they duel it out against Lex Luther’s Frankenstein-type creation. Without giving too much away for viewers who haven’t had the chance to see “Batman v Superman” yet, just believe it was a pretty epic battle scene.
“Batman v Superman” has all the ingredients it takes to make a great movie: good looking and talented actors, an extremely large fan base and a story that has been building over time. Comic fans have been waiting for a Batman and Superman battle, and it could have been so much better if there had been a steady plot from beginning to end. Without blaming director Zack Snyder, it’s hard to understand how he could sit back and watch this movie before its debut, and simply not get bored. If it weren’t for the enormous publicity, the unveiling of Affleck as the new Batman, and the combination of Superman and Wonder Woman, “Batman v Superman” wouldn’t have been the success it was opening weekend.
