The Mustangs football team pulled out their first win of the season on Saturday against previously undefeated Delaware Valley. After back and forth scoring drives and multiple interceptions in the second half, the Aggies scored what should have been a tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter. However, first-year Daryus Henderson made the play of the game by blocking Delaware Valley’s point after attempt, finalizing the score at 21-20. Women’s volleyball continues their success by earning two wins in their tri-match against Elizabethtown college and Lancaster Bible college. Third-year Kylie DesLauriers led the offense with 23 kills against Elizabethtown and 14 against Lancaster Bible, while also contributing a total of 38 digs on the weekend. In the 3-0 win against Elizabethtown, third-year Nicolette Fuglestad added 20 digs to lead the defense. In the much closer 3-2 win over Lancaster Bible, first-years Rachel Lenz and Zakara Masibo each contributed 14 kills to the team total 63 kills of the match.
Field hockey dominated their home game on September 18 against St. Mary’s college with a final score of 4-0. 3 of the four goals came in the first quarter, with two from graduate student Emma Gladstein and one from second-year Monica Druckemiller. The final goal came from sophomore Shae Bennett during the fourth quarter. Fourth-year Nicole Ziegler and second-year Lauren Schulz added an assist each during the win. The Mustangs then traveled to Bridgewater college where a weather delay ended what should have been an overtime match, leaving the score tied at 1-1. Second-year Lauren Tobin scored the lone SU goal to force the game into overtime after a goal by the Eagles during the third quarter. Second-year goalkeeper Jordan Vradenburgh earned her second MAC defensive player of the week honor after contributing 2 saves during each of the games. SU remain undefeated with a record of 6-0-1.
Women’s soccer went 1-1 for the week, winning 2-1 over Shenandoah University and losing 1-0 against Lebanon Valley college. Against Shenandoah, the Mustangs scored the first goal from a shot by third-year Kayla Gerbes, assisted by third-year Courtney Keehner. The second and game winning goal came late in the second half from second-year Karly Sheahan, assisted by third-year Kamille Purcell. Second-year goalkeeper Alison Halstead held the Hornets to one goal by adding 11 saves on the night. In the loss against LVC, the Mustangs took 15 shots, sophomore Elena Heins leading with three shots on goal. Halstead added four more saves on the night.
Men’s golf had a busy week, traveling to Harrisonburg, VA and Hagerstown, MD. On day one of the Kinder-Williams Invitational in VA, the team finished tied for fourth and on day two, SU finished eighth. At the Cardinal Invitational, the Mustangs saw more success, finishing third on day one and improving to second on day two. Ryan Thomas shot a career low four under par, earning him fifth place at the Cardinal Invitational. The team total score of 290 after day two play was a season best.
Men’s soccer tied both games during the week. In the home tie against Marymount University, the Mustangs scored a season high four goals. After two Marymount goals in the first half, SU responded at the start of the second half with two goals of their own. Third-year Gianfranco Vitella scored first, followed by third-year PJ Cera, assisted by fourth-year Adam White. The Mustangs answered another Saints goal, this time with a goal from third-year Zack Reightler. Marymount then scored once more but was again cancelled out. Second-year Brian Rogowski scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Vitella. SU then traveled to St. Mary’s college where they tied 1-1. Scoring the lone goal was third-year Nick Sirasky, his first of the season. The assist came from second-year Ellis Amo-Gottfried.
