The Stevenson University women’s lacrosse season is now more than halfway through their season, having dominated their past three opponents, all of whom are in the Middle Atlantic Commonwealth conference.

The Mustangs bounced back after struggling during a three-game losing streak. The team currently has a 6-6 overall record. Within their conference they have a 3-2 record, outscoring their last three opponents 60-19. These opponents include Arcadia University (21-8), Hood College (21-3) and Widener University (18-8).

Coach Kathy Railey is pleased with the way they are playing now. She believes the 11-5 loss to Lebanon Valley on March 29 was a wakeup call for the team.

“That game was a shock to us.  It changed our attitude. The conference play is getting better now, and we have to be prepared to play our best every game, or it’s going to be tough.”

Sophomore Gabby DiGello said, “The team has a better work ethic and we truly enjoy playing the game as a team and not has a bunch of individuals.”

Railey is impressed with her seniors, all of whom play attack. “The seniors have realized they are coming to the end of their careers and they really want to set a good example for the younger players, by leaving everything they have on that field.”

The seniors who were honored on April 1, Senior Day, included Rachael Akshar, Tori Bruno, Brady Heher, Olivia Monteiro, Mackenzie Reese and Gabby Brooks.

Railey’s freshman class has also been a big part of this team’s success. With 10 first-year players on the roster, they are ready to contribute to their team.

“The freshman class is great,” said Railey. “They have really grown since the beginning of season and are starting to become comfortable and gaining confidence within themselves, which is great to see.”

The goal for the team this year is to continue building on what they have been doing. “We want to make the playoffs and go far. I believe it is possible with the team I have this year,” said Railey.
