Fall momentum builds across Stevenson athletics

Stevenson University teams delivered standout performances across multiple sports this week, highlighted by strong showings in volleyball, soccer, field hockey, golf, cross country and tennis. From overtime thrillers to personal-best finishes, Mustang student-athletes continued to demonstrate resilience, skill and pride as the fall season hit its stride.

Football | Mustangs edged in homecoming heartbreaker

In front of a spirited Homecoming crowd at Mustang Stadium, the Stevenson football team battled wire-to-wire before falling just short in a 29–28 thriller against Misericordia.
Senior quarterback Jordan Adams led the charge with 208 passing yards and three total touchdowns (two rushing, one passing). Louis Clouser added 113 rushing yards and a score, while Stephen Tatum tallied a touchdown reception.
Defensively, Thomas Fisher posted a game-high 12 tackles, and Gabriel Shanks contributed 1.5 sacks. Despite a last-second Cougar touchdown and two-point conversion, the Mustangs’ all-around effort earned a roaring ovation from the Homecoming crowd.

Men’s Soccer | Mustangs earn back-to-back wins in conference play

The Stevenson men’s soccer team (8-4-2, 2-0-1 MACC) continued its strong run with two pivotal victories.

On Wednesday, Gianfranco Vitella and Ellis Amo led the Mustangs to a 2–0 win over McDaniel, with Nolen Olson-Warwick earning the shutout in goal. Stevenson dominated the pace, outshooting McDaniel 14–5.

Three days later, the Mustangs powered past Widener, 3–0, behind a dominant second-half performance. Vitella converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute, Amo extended the lead six minutes later, and Jacob Greene sealed the match with a 76th-minute strike. Olson-Warwick recorded six saves for his second straight clean sheet as Stevenson improved to 7–1 at home.

Women’s Soccer | Sheahan’s late heroics keep Mustangs unbeaten

The Stevenson women’s soccer team (7-2-5, 3-0 MACC) stayed unbeaten in conference play with a 1–0 win over Widener. In the 85th minute, Karly Sheahan netted the game-winner off a perfectly placed corner kick from Isabella Pecunes. Isabella Serano secured the shutout in goal as Stevenson outshot Widener 13–4.

Women’s Volleyball | Mustangs extend MAC dominance

The Stevenson women’s volleyball team continued its impressive run, collecting two key wins to remain perfect in MAC Commonwealth play.

On Tuesday, the Mustangs swept Widener in straight sets (25–16, 25–18, 25–18). Giulia Viglietta, Logan Burge, and Lillianna Hornickle powered a relentless offense, while Courtney Foose and Declyn Tooze fueled the attack with precision setting.

Two nights later, Stevenson earned a gritty 3–1 road victory at Marymount (Va.) (25–18, 21–25, 25–23, 25–23). Sydney Salazar, Rachel Lenz, and Viglietta led the offense, while Olivia Zepfel and Mykiah Williams combined for the match-clinching block. The Mustangs improved to 12–9 overall and 4–0 in conference play.

Field Hockey | No. 20 Mustangs split conference week

The No. 20 Stevenson field hockey team continued its strong season with a pair of hard-fought MAC matchups.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs fell in a 2–1 overtime battle to Messiah despite striking first on a Shae Bennett goal assisted by Sydney Aylward. Jordan Vradenburgh made three saves in the loss.

Stevenson bounced back Friday with a commanding 4–0 shutout win over Eastern. Kailen Hibshman led the offense with two goals and an assist, while Hailey Mertz and Gracyn Catalano each added a score. Vradenburgh and Ollie Winterle combined for the clean sheet as the Mustangs improved to 13–2 overall and 2–1 in MACC play.

Golf | Women finish runner-up, men close fall with strong showing

The Stevenson women’s golf team capped its fall season with a second-place finish at the Battle at Bulle Rock, totaling 724 (+148).
Callie Dias led the Mustangs with an 85 in the final round and a top-10 finish—her third of the fall. Alexis Marsh, Sydni Sundstrom, and Carissa Dargenio each improved on their opening rounds, while Nisachon Sillence rounded out the lineup.

The men’s team placed sixth of 13 at the same event with a 632 (+56). Zachary Wilcox led Stevenson with back-to-back 77s to tie for 15th, while Gavin Barton, Ryan Thomas, and Matt Slivosky contributed steady rounds to close a consistent fall campaign.

Cross Country | Mustangs record personal-best performances

At the Aubrey Shenk Invitational hosted by Gettysburg, both Mustang cross country squads turned in major improvements.

For the women, Lyla Goffena paced the team with a personal-best 22:50.3 (28th of 300) as Stevenson finished 20th of 33 teams. Shaelyn O’Halloran, Grace Ambler, and Meghan Davis each notched PRs in the 6K, continuing the team’s progress toward the MAC Championships.

On the men’s side, eight of nine runners set personal bests as Stevenson placed 21st of 34 teams. Aidan Petraglia led the way with a career-best 27:45.10, followed closely by Julian Paglia (27:56.80). Jay Crawley, Anthony Hagan, and Logan Frazee rounded out the scoring—all with PRs—while Ethan Urig, Sam Kleiner, and Kai Ambrose added personal records of their own.

Men’s Tennis | Mustangs battle to the finish in fall finale

The Stevenson men’s tennis team capped its fall slate with a narrow 4–3 loss at Penn State Harrisburg.
In doubles play, Brandon Nguyen/Christian Coulson and Dominic Duncan/Nate Kelly each posted 6–4 victories, while Luke Appleman/King Nacua fell in a tight 7–6 tiebreak.
Coulson rallied for a three-set singles win (3–6, 6–0, 6–1), and Kelly added another comeback victory (4–6, 6–1, 6–2). Appleman pushed his opponent to three sets in a 6–7, 7–5, 6–4 defeat. Despite the narrow outcome, the Mustangs showed depth and determination to close the fall season.

After college, Ben hopes to one day pursue a career in journalism in the sports beat or as an investigative reporter in politics or world news.
