With teamwork, dedication, and excitement, Stevenson has had a record number of programs and student participants in clubs and activities this year. Formerly known as the “Leadership Banquet,” this year’s Student Leadership Awards will recognize accomplishments of the clubs and organizations by “winning a Stang,” a riff on the theme of winning an Oscar.

Highlighting the great work that student leaders have done and identifying those groups and individuals who have gone above and beyond is the right way to wrap up the year, explained Dan Schwartz, assistant director of student activities.

Schwartz serves as an advisor and advocate for commuter students and also oversees all SU clubs and organizations on campus. He understands that Stevenson students are busy juggling class, research, internships and other responsibilities. Having a group of student leaders who take the time out of their schedules to make a conscious effort to produce a positive impact on the campus improves the overall student experience at Stevenson and deserves much appreciation.

The award show will include two large categories, group and individual, which will encompass several awards aimed at programming areas. The group award category includes, social, large event, career-focused, educational, community service, and diversity programs.  The individual awards cover areas such as new student orientation, organization advisor, emerging leader, president of the year, and outstanding leader of the year.

Dr. Christine Moran will be presenting the Newman Civic Fellows Award, and the Claire E. Moore Award which are given to a SU faculty or staff member who has gone above and beyond in helping Student Activities, and the campus community.

Many leaders across campus are excited for the leadership awards, and are proud of the successful year. Emilee Thursby, junior education major and SGA president, reflected on all the exciting events this year, especially those put on by the new clubs on campus that were recently approved by SGA.

“This has been one of the best years for programming,” she said. If all goes well, the Office of Student Activities hopes to continue the theme next year, according to Schwartz.

“Student Activities has made some great strides this year, and we have another fantastic group of student leaders coming in next year. I’m looking forward to working with them and seeing what our office can do to further improve leadership development initiatives, such as Leaderstang and, club forums on campus,” said Schwartz.
