The Mustangs Set to Face the Sea Gulls in Football Home Opener

Stevenson’s football team opens its home schedule Saturday at Mustang Stadium with a matchup against nationally ranked Salisbury as the Mustangs try to build on a season-opening 25-21 victory last week at Saint Vincent College.

The Sea Gulls come to Stevenson territory after a 49-0 win against the Albright Lions. Both the Mustangs and the Sea Gulls will take the field on Saturday ready for a fight.

Salisbury runs a unique old-school triple-option offense that could pose a threat to Stevenson’s defense.

Senior cornerback Charles Greer described the Sea Gulls’ offense as “Our [Stevenson football] most unique defensive task so far in my career here at Stevenson and we as a defense are excited to attack such an unorthodox challenge.

“We’ve always had an emphasis on the basics of the triple-option even going into [football] camp so our preparation has been thorough throughout our time as a team so far this Fall,” continued Greer.

Against Saint Vincent, the Mustangs led most of the game, but special teams — two missed extra points and a punt return allowed for a touchdown — put Stevenson behind 21-19 in the fourth quarter. A late 64-yard touchdown drive, capped by Brandon Walker’s second touchdown, sealed the game for SU.

“I firmly believe our offense and defense can match any team we face. It comes down to our discipline and attention to detail,” said Greer.

The kickoff for the Stevenson-Salisbury match will be at 1 p.m. and is the first home game for the Mustangs this season. The outcome of the game, which will likely come down to a battle between offensive technique and defensive strength, will be an entertaining feat to witness.

In addition to the football team taking the field this Saturday, the ‘Stang’s have a busy weekend ahead of them in athletics.
