Activism is eternal.
On May 26 through May 30, it exists in the hearts of heroes on Baltimore’s Hippodrome stage through the performance of Tony Award-wining musical “SUFFS.”
“I think what I love about the show is that we are giving a broad lens of the women’s rights movement, and we are also giving a broad lens of what it means to fight for what you believe in,” said critically acclaimed actor Maya Keleher, who plays Alice Paul, the lead role in “SUFFS.”.
The show, written and composed by Shaina Taub, follows the early 20th– century fight for women’s rights and is performed by an entirely women and non-binary cast.
“Part of the reason why all the characters are played by women and non-binary people is because our director Leigh Silverman really wanted to make sure it felt like this story was being told by the people who it impacted,” Keleher said.
There are over 20 performers that are required to tell the tale of “SUFFS.”
Keleher explained that this show holds a special place in her heart. She said that she feels the show can act as a portal into the history of the women’s rights movements and how activism is not done alone.
“By the end of the show I hope that it is clear that to be an activist is to fight for what you believe in to create community around that and bring people along with their own strengths,” Keleher said.
Tickets for the May 26 and May 30 showings at the Hippodrome Theatre at the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center can be found on Broadway Across America.
