SGA elections to take place in March

The Student Government Association (SGA) will be holding elections for the 2016-2017 school year to fill executive board positions.

SGAJennifer Milam, assistant director of Student Activities, said that this year only one candidate is in line for each position except for Director of Philanthropy, in which both Curtis McInnis and Brittany Appleby-Rumon are running. Due to a low number of applicants, elections for Senate positions and the Freshman Class Representative are postponed until the fall.

Gabe Stewardson, current SGA vice president, said, “It’s important to vote for SGA elections because these are the students who are going to be the head of change here at Stevenson, and it’s even more important to voice student issues and concerns to the SGA each year.”

Every year Stevenson students have the opportunity to vote in the last phase of the election process at designated tables on campus. This year tables will be in the Rockland lobby on the Owings Mills campus on March 7 and March 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. Also, in the Manuszak Center on the Greenspring campus on March 8, March 10, and March 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to Milam.

The Student Government Association’s website,, states that their mission is to “improve the quality of student’s academic, professional, social, and personal development while at Stevenson University,” while also being a democratic voice for the student body, among other things.

Emilee Thursby, current SGA president, describes SGA as “a voice for the student population.” The Student Government Association plans many campus-wide events including Homecoming Fanfare and Haunted Hallways. They also tackle important issues, most recently the traffic accidents on campus, according to Thursby.

Even if students are not executive board members or a senator, they can still make an active contribution to changing issues through the SGA. The Student Government Association holds open senate meetings which students can attend and voice their comments or concerns on certain topics.

The next open senate meeting will be held March 4 at 5 p.m. in Rockland A and will cover the topic of textbooks, according to Thursby.
